Ocracoke Island camping is the stuff of dreams. Imagine yourself sleeping in a place so dark that you can see millions of stars and so quiet that you can hear the roll of the ocean waves. That’s Ocracoke camping for you. Two types of Ocracoke Island camping are available. You can enjoy an oceanfront Ocracoke campground within walking distance of the beach or one that’s in the center of town, closer to the shops and restaurants. At either one you’ll experience the delights of camping in tents, campers or RVs on a small and quiet island. Be sure to reserve your sites in advance, as camping on Ocracoke is quite popular. If you choose the tent camping option, bring longer tent stakes for anchoring your tent in the sand.

Jerniman's is a collective campground, gas station and golf cart rental business. The campground is the closest village accommodation to the ocean on Ocracoke Island, less than a half-mile shy of the first beach access road. It offers 29 sites, 24 of which can accommodate RVs and campers. Tent camping is allowed, and all sites have adequate space for parking. The sites offer electrical and water hookups, and some have septic as well. A communal laundry, bathhouse and dumping station are also on site. Adding to the convenience factor is a grocery store and hardware store right next to the campground. Reservations can be made online, and be sure to check their website for their list of fun events happening all year round. Hart's Hot Dog Hut is also on-site, open seasonally Tuesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast and lunch and Thursday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner.

The Sea Monkey Kite Lodge owner Keith Croghan is the ambassador of kiting on the island and gladly shares his love of the island and sport. Keith operates a boutique kite lodge and budding permaculture ranch. The guest house, a perfect base for all your adventures, serves as the center for like-minded windsports and watersports enthusiasts. The lodge offers accommodations for larger groups but also welcomes solo travelers, with options of booking the whole property for your group, private rooms or even the occasional van/tent/coach camper. Tucked away on a quiet creek with plenty of shade and a well-provisioned kitchen, it’s got everything you need and is centrally located within walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants.
