At the southern end of Ocracoke village, next to the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferry terminal, a visitor center offers visitors restroom facilities, maps, information and exhibits about all the things to do on Ocracoke. The National Park Service operates the center year round. During the summer it offers interactive, family-friendly programs multiple times throughout the day.
The first national seashore in the country, Cape Hatteras National Seashore stretches more than 70 miles along parts of three islands: Bodie Island (just south of Nags Head), Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. The majority of land on Ocracoke is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and is publicly owned and administered by the National Park Service.
