Ocracoke Restaurant
Family owned and operated, The Flying Melon Café on Ocracoke Island serves Creole and Southern Cuisine that consists of local seafood, fresh ingredients and homemade sauces. Owners Paula and Michael Schramel hail from New Orleans and have deep ties to Louisiana culture, especially when it comes to food. Michael has been cooking since he was 17 years old and has created many one of a kind dishes that blend French-all and Louisiana style flavors with fresh caught seafood such as their seafood gumbo and Coquilles Saint Jacques. Their son Nat, who is a certified sommelier, is in charge of the beverage side of the restaurant. Nat has brought in delicious wines to pair with the food and has created some of the best cocktails on the island like his lemon-rosemary martini. The layout and decor of the building embodies the simple lifestyle of Ocracoke with the tall lighthouse style tower and a mix of local and New Orleans based art throughout the restaurant.
